Sumitra Mahajan to be Elected Lok Sabha Speaker 

  • Sumitra Mahajan, an eight-time BJP member of Parliament from Indore, is set to be elected as the next Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
  • She will be on Friday formally elected as the next speaker of the Lok Sabha.
  • She has been representing Indore since 1989 and is the longest serving woman parliamentarian.
  • She has never lost the Lok Sabha elections since 1989 and was elected from Indore for the eighth time She was a Minister of State in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government from 1999 to 2004.
  • Meira Kumar, who lost the recent Lok Sabha election from Sasaram in Bihar to BJP's Chhedi Paswan, was the Speaker in the 15th Lok Sabha.
  • She will be only the second woman Speaker ever; Meira Kumar, who presided over the House for the last five years, was the first.
  • Mahajan, 72, is an eight-term member of the Lok Sabha from Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Mahajan, lovingly called Tai.
